App Onomatope オノマトペ · version 1.6 · last updated: 26 September 2026

The quickest way to reach me is onomatope@jd-japanese.pl. In Settings, under Support, the Suggest a feature and Report a problem buttons prepare a message for you — nothing goes out until you send it yourself.

Something in the Japanese looks wrong

Please tell me — this is the most useful kind of message I can get. Onomatopoeia are exactly the material where a difference stated half a degree too strongly teaches an untruth: ころころ and ごろごろ differ by degree, not by category, so a sentence meant to rule one of them out can end up ruling out nothing. Include the word and the sentence if you can.

"Nobody actually says that"

Also worth writing about, and not the same complaint as the one above. A form can be correctly built and still be something no one says — and then the app has no right to teach it. Tell me which sentence, and where you have heard it differently.

A question felt unfair

If one of the wrong options looked like it could also be correct, that is a bug in the content, not in your Japanese. Tell me which question it was.

Why there is no typing in the exercises

Deliberate. What is being measured is your choice between four similar sounds, not your thumb — and ぐっすり typed from memory says nothing about whether you can tell it from ぐっしょり. You answer by tapping tiles and picking a variant, which means a typo can never be mistaken for not knowing, and the statistics say something about the teaching alone. The only text field is in the “Sentences” tab, and nothing you type there counts towards your progress.

A result in the “Sentences” tab looks wrong

The meaning in a sentence and the onomatopoeia suggested for a description are written by a language model, and it can be wrong. Write to me, and paste your sentence or description into the message along with the mode you used (“What it means in this line” or “Describe a feeling”): the server does not keep your text, so without it I have no way to reproduce what happened. The result does not count towards your progress or your reviews, so a model's mistake does not spoil anything in your learning. An onomatopoeia marked “Not in this app” has not been through the review the app's words go through — all the more reason to be careful with it.

I cannot see the “Sentences” tab

The tab appears only on a device that can confirm the app is genuine through Apple's App Attest. On a device that does not support it the tab is absent, and the rest of the app works unchanged. AI help itself needs an internet connection — without one the button waits and the app tells you why.

Scanning a photo finds no text

Text in a photo is recognized on the phone, so a close, straight photo in good light helps. Recognition can be inaccurate — especially with hand-drawn lettering in a speech bubble — so read the sentence before you send it; you can correct it in the field. You can always type it yourself, too. Scanning belongs to the “What it means in this line” mode; a description is written in your own words.

Where is the example I added?

Add as an example puts the sentence under “Your examples” on the page of the word it is about — open that word from the word list. The example stays on this phone only, it never becomes a question, and it does not go away when you delete the entry from a list in the “Sentences” tab; you remove it on the word's page. The button is there only in the “What it means in this line” mode, because only there does the sentence come from you rather than from the model.

Free requests and the subscription

Everyone gets a few free requests each month, with or without Premium. When they run out, the app shows when they come back. An empty answer — no onomatopoeia in the sentence, or nothing that fits the description — does not use up a request. More requests come with the AI Help subscription, monthly or yearly. It renews automatically until you turn it off — in your Apple Account settings or with the Manage subscription button, at least a day before the paid period ends. The subscription does not unlock levels, and Premium does not include the subscription.

I cannot see the listen button

Sentences are read by the system speech synthesizer, on the phone and offline. The button appears only when a Japanese voice is installed in iOS — without one it disappears rather than play silence. You can add the voice in iOS Settings, in the speech section of Accessibility.

I lost my progress

Progress lives on the device. If you exported a backup earlier, Settings → Data → Import progress restores it — note that importing replaces everything currently on the device. If you reinstalled without a backup, the progress is gone and I have no copy of it — there is no account, and the server the “Sentences” tab talks to knows nothing about your learning. The lists in the “Sentences” tab and your examples on words are not part of the progress backup.

I bought something and the app does not see it

Use Restore purchases — it is in Settings, under Premium, and on the subscription screen. Purchases belong to your Apple Account, so they come back on any device signed in with that account. If that does not help, write to me with the date of purchase. Refunds are handled by Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.
