Terms of Use

Bunmyaku · version 1.2 · last updated: 2 September 2026

By installing and using Bunmyaku you accept the terms below. If you do not agree with them, do not use the app.

What this app is

Bunmyaku is a tool for studying Japanese vocabulary on your own, at JLPT levels N5 through N1. The learning — reviews, every question type, the study plan and your progress — runs entirely on your device and without an internet connection. The app can also read Japanese text from a photo so you can collect vocabulary of your own. Version 1.2 adds optional AI features, which use a server and which you start yourself. This is not a taught course, a certification service, or preparation that guarantees passing the JLPT.

License

The app is licensed under Apple's standard license terms (Licensed Application End User License Agreement). These terms supplement them and describe what is specific to Bunmyaku; where the two conflict, Apple's terms prevail.

You receive a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app on devices associated with your Apple ID, in line with App Store rules.

The content — dictionary entries, readings, meanings, example sentences and translations — is protected by copyright and remains the property of the app's author. You may use it for your own study. You may not copy it in bulk, publish it, resell it, use it to build a competing product, or use it to train machine-learning models.

Photos and the text you bring in yourself

The app reads Japanese text from photos you point it at. It is your responsibility that you are entitled to use those photos for your own study. A photo is read on your phone and does not leave the device; the app neither saves it nor sends it anywhere. Words and sentences collected this way are your material and stay on the device.

JLPT material — a one-time purchase

The AI features — an auto-renewing subscription

The AI features are separate and optional. There are two: Analyze breaks into words a sentence you read from a photo and confirmed, and Write a sentence with AI composes a short example sentence for a chosen entry in its dictionary form. They are the only part of the app that costs something every time it is used, which is why they are billed as a subscription rather than sold outright.

Your data

Your progress and the words and sentences you add are saved only on your device. Keeping them safe is up to you — deleting the app deletes that data. Use Export progress in Settings to keep a copy.

The AI features are the exception, and only when you start them: what goes to the server is one sentence you confirmed, or one entry from your vocabulary. Your study history does not, nothing that could identify you does, and a photo never does — text in a photo is read by the phone itself. What is stored, and for how long, is described in the privacy policy.

Accuracy of the content

The material was prepared with due care and is checked automatically, but natural language is more complex than any simplification of it. Meanings and examples are educational and do not constitute a linguistic norm. If you find an error, write in — corrections go into later releases.

This applies to the AI features separately: their answers are generated by a language model and can be wrong. They are a hint, not an exam grade or a teacher's opinion — treat them as a starting point for checking, not as a verdict. That goes especially for words and sentences brought into your study this way: you see them before they are added, and you decide what goes in.

Bunmyaku is not affiliated with, authorized by or endorsed by the Japan Foundation, Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, or any body that administers the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. Level labels describe how the material is ordered for learning; they are not a reproduction of an official examination vocabulary list, and no such exhaustive list is published. Using the app is not a promise that you will pass any examination.

Liability

The app is provided "as is", without warranty of fitness for a particular purpose. To the extent permitted by law, the author is not liable for damages arising from use of the app, including loss of study data. This provision does not limit consumer rights granted by mandatory provisions of law.

Changes to these terms

These terms may change with later versions of the app. The version that applies to this release is always available at this address, with the date of the last update. Continuing to use the app after a change means accepting the new terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by Polish law. This does not affect the protection available to a consumer under the law of their country of habitual residence.
