By installing and using Kaname you accept the terms below. If you do not agree with them, do not use the app.
What this app is
Kaname is a tool for studying Japanese grammar on your own, at JLPT levels N5 through N1. The learning — reviews, every question type, the study plan and your progress — runs entirely on your device and without an internet connection. Version 1.2 adds one optional feature, AI analysis, which uses a server and which you start yourself. This is not a taught course, a certification service, or preparation that guarantees passing the JLPT.
License
The app is licensed under Apple's standard license terms (Licensed Application End User License Agreement). These terms supplement them and describe what is specific to Kaname; where the two conflict, Apple's terms prevail.
You receive a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app on devices associated with your Apple ID, in line with App Store rules.
The grammar content — explanations, example sentences, and the reasoning behind contrast pairs — is protected by copyright and remains the property of the app's author. You may use it for your own study. You may not copy it in bulk, publish it, resell it, or use it to build a competing product.
JLPT material — a one-time purchase
- JLPT level N5 is available free of charge, in full.
- Levels N4, N3, N2 and N1 are opened by a one-time purchase. It is not a subscription and it does not expire. You can buy a single level, a bundle of several, or all of the material — the full set costs less than the levels bought separately.
- When you buy another level, you pay only for what you do not already have.
- Payment is handled by Apple through the App Store. The app shows the price that applies at the moment of purchase, in your currency.
- The purchase is tied to your Apple ID. You can restore it on another device with Restore purchases.
- Refunds are handled solely by Apple, under App Store rules, at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- A refund closes the material it covered again. The progress you have already made is not deleted and stays available in reviews.
AI analysis — an auto-renewing subscription
AI analysis is a separate, optional feature: it checks a sentence you write yourself and identifies grammar patterns in text. It is the only part of the app that costs something every time it is used, which is why it is billed as a subscription rather than sold outright.
- Every month you get 10 free calls of the analysis, at no charge and without a subscription. The app shows the counter and it renews monthly.
- The subscription is available monthly or yearly and renews automatically until you turn it off. The app shows the price and the period before you buy, in your currency.
- Payment for the next period is charged to your Apple account within 24 hours before the current period ends.
- Canceling: in your Apple ID settings (Settings → your name → Subscriptions), at the latest 24 hours before the current period ends. The subscription keeps working until the end of the period you paid for.
- The subscription does not cover JLPT levels and never will. Material bought outright stays yours regardless of it.
- Billing is handled by Apple through the App Store; the refund rules above apply there too.
- AI analysis needs an internet connection and may be temporarily unavailable — during maintenance, for example, or an outage at the model provider. The rest of the app keeps working normally.
Your data
Your progress and the sentences you add are saved only on your device. Keeping them safe is up to you — deleting the app deletes that data. Use Export data in Settings to keep a copy.
AI analysis is the exception, and only when you start it: the pattern being practiced and the sentence you wrote are sent to the server. Your study history is not, nothing that could identify you is, and a photo never is — text in a photo is read by the phone itself. What is stored, and for how long, is described in the privacy policy.
Accuracy of the content
The grammar material was prepared with due care, but natural language is more complex than any simplification of it. Explanations and examples are educational and do not constitute a linguistic norm. If you find an error, write in — corrections go into later releases.
This applies to AI analysis separately: its answers are generated by a language model and can be wrong. They are a hint, not an exam grade or a teacher's opinion — treat them as a starting point for checking, not as a verdict.
Liability
The app is provided "as is", without warranty of fitness for a particular purpose. To the extent permitted by law, the author is not liable for damages arising from use of the app, including loss of study data. This provision does not limit consumer rights granted by mandatory provisions of law.
Changes to these terms
These terms may change with later versions of the app. The current version is always available at this address, with the date of the last update. Continuing to use the app after a change means accepting the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by Polish law. This does not affect the protection available to a consumer under the law of their country of habitual residence.
