Joshi · version 1.5 · last updated October 2, 2026

Joshi practices Japanese particles: は, が, を, に, で and the rest. Below are the answers to the questions that come up most often. If yours is not here, write in.

The quickest way to reach me is joshi@jd-japanese.pl. In Settings, under Support, the Suggest a feature and Report a problem buttons prepare a message for you — nothing goes out until you send it yourself.

The app says my answer is wrong and I am sure it is right

Write in — this is the most valuable report that can arrive. Give the sentence and your answer. Particles can be interchangeable, and a sentence where two of them are correct should never have made it into an exercise. A report like that comes before everything else.

Why is the variant I expected missing from some sentences?

Because a wrong variant has to be genuinely wrong in that sentence. A particle that produces a correct sentence with a different meaning is not a wrong variant — it is a second answer. That is why sentences with は do not offer も, even though both can be right in that slot.

How does the app know I confuse に with で, rather than just knowing に poorly?

Because it counts three things separately: the particle itself, its particular role, and the pair. A gapped sentence whose variants are に and で is evidence about that pair — and only sentences like that raise it. That is why “weakest spots” can show you に ↔ で instead of separate percentages for に and for で.

Why is the translation hidden by default?

Because with the translation in view you pick the particle to fit the English sentence instead of reading the Japanese one — and you end up practicing something other than what you think. Settings → Appearance → “Translation” lets you set it to “always” or turn it off completely.

Why don't the levels match the JLPT?

Because a particle does not divide along those lines sensibly. に for a time is N5, for a destination N4, in the passive higher still — and they are learned side by side, because they get confused with each other, not with the rest of their own level. The five levels describe how the material actually builds up.

Can I go to level 4 without finishing the earlier ones?

Yes. A level is not a lock — the order is a sequence, not a condition. The only thing locked is the levels covered by the purchase.

I lost my streak even though I practiced

A study day starts at the hour set in Settings (4:00 by default), not at midnight — a session at 0:30 still belongs to the evening before. A streak breaks only after a whole day missed, so one evening without study does not reset it.

What does the “Sentences” tab do?

It takes any sentence — from a manga, subtitles, a sign or your own head — and shows what its particles do. “Explain” takes the sentence as correct and gives each particle its role, named after a role from this app. “Check mine” assesses a sentence of your own: each particle is marked right, wrong, or “works, but…”, with a short why and the particle to use. Only particles are checked. A sentence can be at most 120 characters. The answer is written by a language model, and nothing in this tab counts towards your progress or reviews.

A result in the “Sentences” tab looks wrong

Explanations and assessments of particles are written by a language model, and it can be wrong — in either direction. Write to me, and paste your sentence into the message along with the mode you used (“Explain” or “Check mine”): the server does not keep your sentence, so without it I have no way to reproduce what happened. The result does not count towards your progress, so a model's mistake does not spoil anything in your learning.

I cannot see the “Sentences” tab

The tab appears only on a device that can confirm the app is genuine through Apple's App Attest. On a device that does not support it the tab is absent, and the rest of the app works unchanged. AI help itself needs an internet connection.

Scanning a photo finds no text

Text in a photo is recognized on the phone, so a close, straight photo in good light helps. Recognition can be inaccurate — read the sentence before you send it; you can correct it in the field. You can always type it yourself, too.

Free requests and the subscription

Everyone gets five free requests each month, with or without Premium. When they run out, the app shows when they come back. An answer with nothing to show — a sentence with no particle — does not use up a request. More requests come with the AI Help subscription, monthly or yearly. It renews automatically until you turn it off — in your Apple Account settings or with the Manage subscription button, at least a day before the paid period ends. The subscription does not unlock levels, and Premium does not include the subscription.

I bought something and the app does not see it

Use Restore purchases — it is in Settings, under Premium, and on the subscription screen. Purchases belong to your Apple Account, so they come back on any device signed in with that account. If that does not help, write to me with the date of purchase. Refunds are handled by Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.

Is Premium a one-time purchase?

Yes. Premium is one purchase with access forever and no renewals. Separately there is the optional AI Help subscription — it applies only to the “Sentences” tab.

Will I lose my progress if I change phones?

You do not have to. Progress is stored on the device alone, but Settings has “Export progress” and “Import progress” — you move the file however you like, and the import replaces everything on the new device. The purchase travels with your Apple Account. There is no iCloud sync. The list of sentences in the “Sentences” tab and “Your examples” on the role pages are not part of the progress backup.

Does the app work without internet?

All of the learning does. Only the “Sentences” tab needs the internet; apart from it and handling purchases, the app makes no network request.

Privacy

No account, no analytics, no advertising. Only the “Sentences” tab talks to a server, and the sentence it sends is not stored there. Details: privacy policy.
